Der Christmas Jam findet seit 1988 jährlich in Asheville im US-Bundesstaat North Carolina statt — dem Geburtsort des ehemaligen Gitarristen der Allman Brothers Band. Die Einnahmen des Konzertes gehen traditionell an lokale Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen.
Für das 30. Jubiläum wurde die Konzertreihe erstmals auf zwei Abende ausgeweitet. Am 7. Dezember 2018 spielten neben Haynes Stammformation Gov’t Mule auch Sängerin Grace Potter, Country-Musiker Jamey Johnson, der Pianist Marco Benevento und der erste Phish-Bassist Mike Gordon. Am darauffolgenden Abend traten Foo Fighters-Frontmann Dave Grohl, Country-Sänger Eric Church, Gitarrist Jim James sowie Joe Bonamassa auf.
»Der Christmas Jam ist ein besonderes Event für mich und meine Familie«, betont der 63-jährige Initiator. »Auch über dreißig Jahre nach der ersten Ausgabe ist es immer noch beeindruckend, diese tatkräftigen Talente für meine geliebte Heimatstadt Asheville zusammenkommen zu lassen.«
In diesem Jahr wird die Veranstaltung am 9. Dezember stattfinden. Dabei wird Haynes unter anderem von Slash und Myles Kennedy, Billy F. Gibbons, Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening, Clutch und den American Banies sowie Karina Rykman unterstützt.
Der am Tag zuvor erscheinende Mitschnitt aus 2018 wird als 2CD+DVD, als 3CD+2 Blu-Ray, digital sowie als Vinyl erhältlich sein. Die vier verschiedenen Doppel-LPs unterscheiden sich nicht nur in ihren Farben, sondern auch in der Songauswahl.
