Mitte der siebziger Jahre erlebte Bob Dylan seinen zweiten Frühling: Im Januar 1974 ging er erstmals seit sieben Jahren wieder auf Tour — die höchst erfolgreiche Rundreise wurde auf seinem ersten Live-Album Before The Flood (1974) dokumentiert.
Für seine nächste Konzertreise schwebte dem singenden Gitarristen ein besonderes Konzept vor: Die Rolling Thunder Revue sollte in kleineren Sälen stattfinden und eine Art Varieté-Show sein: Neben seiner festen Band traten etwa auch Joan Baez oder Joni Mitchell sowie Beat-Poet Allen Ginsberg auf. Mitschnitte der Konzerte fanden später im Film Renaldo And Clara (1978) Verwendung; Martin Scorsese arbeitete die Reise später außerdem in der Dokumentation Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story By Martin Scorsese (2019) auf.
Der zweite Teil der Tour startete am 18. April 1976 in Lakeland, Florida und umfasste insgesamt 27 Auftritte, vornehmlich im Süden der USA. Dylans Band bestand zu dieser Zeit aus den Gitarristen Mick Ronson, Steve Soles, David Mansfield und T Bone Burnett sowie dem Bassisten Rob Stoner, Geigerin Scarlet Rivera und Schlagzeuger Howie Wyeth.
The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings versammelt nun alle professionellen Aufnahmen dieses Tourteil: Insgesamt 381 Songs enthält die umfangreiche Box, von denen 371 bisher unveröffentlicht sind. »Die Rolling Thunder Revue war die erste landesweite Punk Rock-Tour«, blickt Burnett zurück. »Sie öffnete die Tür für eine regelrechte Explosion an neuer Musik —The Clash, Elvis Costello, die Ramones und so weiter. Dylan hatte es wieder geschafft: Er war durch Türen gegangen, die andere für Wände gehalten hatten.«
Das 39 CDs umfassende Boxset erscheint am 6. November. Separat erscheint außerdem der Mitschnitt vom 16. Mai 1976 aus Fort Worth in Texas. Aus diesem Konzert stammt auch die erste Single, ein Mitschnitt der Nummer ›Going, Going, Gone‹.
