Entstanden ist das 1988 veröffentlichte Album während einer Auszeit der Rolling Stones: Richards hatte sich über den Streit über die grundsätzliche musikalische Ausrichtung der Band mit Mick Jagger überworfen, der selbst eine Solo-Karriere anstrebte. Auf Talk Is Cheap besingt der Gitarrist ihre Fehde ganz direkt in ›You Don't Move Me‹.
Die Band, die sich Richards für seine erste eigene Platte zusammenstellte, umfasste die Session-Cracks Waddy Wachtel (Gitarre), Ivan Neville (Klavier), Charley Drayton (Bass) und Steve Jordan (Schlagzeug). Zudem stellten sich Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos hochkarätige Gäste zur Seite: Der früheren Stones-Gitarristen Mick Taylor (›I Could Have Stood You Up‹), Chuck Leavell, Maceo Parker, Johnnie Johnson und Bootsy Collins sind auf Talk Is Cheap ebenso zu hören wie die Memphis Horns.
Die Neuauflage wird sechs Bonustitel enthalten, darunter Eddie Taylors ›Big Town Playboy‹ und ›My Babe‹: Ein Video der feinen Jimmy Reed-Nummer gibt es hier.
